Write-up: Partial complex epileptic seizures, poorly controlled by medication. Epilepsy surgery in May 2000 did not stop seizures. Stopped speech development until surgery in May 2000. Severe hyperactivity and developmentally delayed. According to the parents, he was achieving his developmental milestones normally during his first year of age with walking alone at 11 months and starting to babble dada at 2 year old until he developed seizures the day after he had his MMR immunization at 1 year old. Hos parents noted that his communication (speech skills) have been significantly delayed because of intractable seizures with multiple medication changes. His parents note also that his motor development, however, has not been compromised. Medication changes were mostly due to side effects noted. His parents report that the patient has not had a major seizure for six months. His current medication, Topamax, seems to be doing well for him. Recently, he has been able to verbalize single words and repeat what he hears when prompted but still cannot form sentences and has also developed new words of his own. He has also recently begin labeling objects and expressing his needs. Pt reports the use of a few two words phrases. He reportedly is able to understand clearly everything that is said to him and mostly expressed himself using gestures or motions through pointing but no speech. His parents describe him as a happy and funny child who gets along well with others of his same age and his brother. He is said to independent and hardheaded at times and is sometimes prone to temper tantrums and seems active. No changes were noted in eating habits or sleep patterns. There were no significant changes in behavior from day to day or from situation to stuation.

CDC Split Type:

Write-up: Induced autism and chronic diarrhea. My son received his routine vaccinations on 2/17/99 and had displayed a normal childhood development, including language skills, social skills and other pertinent childhood landmarks. A few days prior to vaccinations, he was showing some UR symptoms including sneezing and nasal discharge. About 12 days, post vax, he became lethargic and depressed. He became anorexic and also began having diarrhea. He was running a low-grade fever, so we began standard dosing of ibuprofen and Tylenol, which seemed to control the fever. However, around day 13, his symptoms became worse and the OTC meds were not controlling the fever. Unfortunately, at the time, we were en route to Florida via airline, so we did not have much choice but to wait until our arrival there to seek medical attention. On 3/4/99, at 01:00, we visited an ER where he was examined, found to have a high fever and was assumed that he had a viral infection. We were told to encourage fluid uptake and sent home. Over the next few days, his fever broke, but we noticed that he still seemed in a daze and his diarrhea persisted. As the weeks and months went by, we began to notice major changes in his behavior. He became withdrawn, preferring to play with himself rather than his siblings. He became heavily focused on certain activities and lost his language and eye contact. We began to wonder if he had lost his hearing, but tests proved negative. In the spring of 2000, a neurologist confirmed our fears that he had become autistic. Since then, we have instituted numerous behavior and biological therapies in an effort to help him. We have reviewed tape of him up to the time of his 16 month check-up and they showed a completely normal child. As a parent, we watch these videos with a broken heart, feeling that our child''s mental health had been robbed from him. Since the introduction of the MMR vaccine, rates for autism in the USA have increased from 1:10,000 in early 1980''s to 1:200 today. We are convinced that our son had a reaction to the vaccines he was given on 2/17/99, which induced his autistic condition. Frankly, every pediatrician we have visited now have concern that our son was given so many vaccinations at once. It angers me that with so much research emerging that again and again points a finger at a link to vaccinations and autism, we would still put children at risk.

CDC Split Type:

Write-up: After watching some past videos, I believe my child had a reaction to the MMR vaccine he was given on 12/11/95. By the following December of 1996, we were having his hearing tested, due to an obvious language delay. Within months, we learned he had autism. He was officially dx''d as autistic in 10/98. There was a noticeable difference in behavior by 12/25/95 and we make reference on tape of how sick he had been earlier thus making me believe now, that he had a reaction. 60 day follow-up states the pt still has autism and he has been tested for heavy metals and the level of mercury is 8.
