CDC 'Split Type':

Write-up: Per hospital and family reports, child was talking to grandfather when she collapsed and stopped breathing. Grandfather performed CPR until EMS arrived and child was transported via AirMed to Medical Center. Child expired on 01/30/2013. The following information was obtained through follow-up and/or provided by the government. 03/19/13 and 03/25/13 Death Certificate received. Final Cause of Death: Cerebral Herniation. Due to Cerebral Asphyxia. Due to Influenza. 03/19/13 ER records received. Service date 1/28/13. Diagnosis: Cardiopulmonary arrest, acidosis, Cerebral asphyxia, Influenza A infection. Patient presents with 2-3 day hx of cough and fever consistent with influenza, on Tamiflu. One isolated cough led to stopped breathing. Resusitation initiated by grandfather. Found apeneic and pulseless by EMS. Epinephrine and intubation. Spontaneous return of pulse. No response to stimulation, no spontaneous movement, no corneal reflexes, hypotonic. Mechanical ventilation. IV Rocephin. Acidosis consistent with cardiopulmonary arrest. Possible desseminated intravascular coagulation. ICU. Likely severe anoxic brain injury. NG tube. Hypotension tx with dopamine. Declining neurological exam, worsening vascular tone. No evidence of brain activity - brain death. Elected to remove ETT and withdraw respiratory support.

Write-up: Per hospital and family reports, child was talking to grandfather when she collapsed and stopped breathing. Grandfather performed CPR until EMS arrived and child was transported via AirMed to Medical Center. Child expired on 01/30/2013.
